Aside from loving music from certain eras I also have a thing for certain types of sounds, one of which are fuzzed out guitars.  1968 is a very good year for fuzzy guitars and this soundtrack features a bunch.  I’ve actually owned this a couple of times, both from Groove Merchant in San Francisco.  Cool Chris knows that for the most part if he plays me something that has fuzzy guitars and soulful drums I’m going to get it.

This soundtrack by Hugo Montenegro has just what you’d expect from a film that features Frank Sinatra and Raquel Welch and kicks off with Det. Blue Eyes finding the title character on a scuba trip, seriously groovy groovy tuneage from the tail end of the swingin’ sixties.  It rocks, it rolls, some times it’s blissed out loungey type music heavy on the fuzz and horns (“The Shark”), other times it’s full on rockin’ psych (“Sugar Seymour”).  The very breezy “Again” was sampled by the Beatnuts to good effect, but much more could be mined from this record which I’m pretty sure has been reissued on CD, so you might be able to find it at discerning record stores near you.

As an added treat, here’s my favorite quote from the back notes  “(Hugo) Montenegro doesn’t rock-tease; he goes for the groin; it hurts a little…but only until you start loving it!” You have to admit, that’s simply precious.

Cheers,

Michael
